How to Make a Paper Airplane with Handmade Paper in 2025

I work at Bluecat Paper, and one thing I really enjoy is making paper airplanes, especially with handmade paper. It’s simple, fun, and using handmade paper gives it a nice, unique feel you just don’t get with regular paper. Here’s how to make a paper airplane using handmade paper.

Why Use Handmade Paper for Paper Airplanes?

Handmade paper is different. It has a natural texture and is made from recycled or eco-friendly materials. That means your paper airplane not only looks cool but is better for the environment. The kind of paper we make at Bluecat Paper works great for this.

What You’ll Need

  • A sheet of handmade paper, about A4 size or square

  • A flat surface to fold on

  • Optional: something like a bone folder or a ruler to make sharp folds

How to Make It

  1. Lay the Paper Flat
Place your sheet of handmade paper on a smooth surface. Handmade paper can be a bit textured, so smoothing it out helps.

  2. Fold Lengthwise
Fold the paper in half lengthwise, making a strong crease down the middle. This will guide the rest of your folds.

  3. Fold the Nose
Unfold the paper, then fold the top two corners down toward the middle crease. This creates the nose of the plane.

  4. Fold the Nose Again
Fold those new top corners down toward the middle crease again, sharpening the nose. Because handmade paper is thicker, press down firmly on the folds.

  5. Fold the Plane in Half
Fold the paper in half outward so the nose is on the outside.

  6. Make the Wings
Fold each side down so the edges line up with the bottom of the plane. Press the folds to keep them sharp.

  7. Add Your Touch
Handmade paper is nice because of its natural feel and look. Add some simple decorations if you want, maybe with natural inks.

Why Does Handmade Paper Help Your Plane Fly Further?

From working with Bluecat Paper, I’ve seen firsthand why handmade paper works well for paper airplanes.

  • It’s a little heavier and thicker than normal paper, which means it holds momentum and flies further.

  • The fibers make it strong, so the plane keeps its shape while flying.

  • It’s flexible enough to bend just a bit for lift.

All these things together help your airplane fly smoother and farther.

Try Other Plane Designs

Once you get the hang of the basic plane, try different styles like the dart for speed, the glider for slow, steady flight, or the stunt plane for tricks. Handmade paper works well with all of these.

Why It’s Good to Use Handmade Paper

Handmade paper is better for the planet. It’s often made from recycled stuff and uses less energy than regular paper. At Bluecat Paper, we take pride in making our paper with care for the environment.

Besides flying, your paper airplane can be:

  • A personal gift, decorated your way

  • A unique decoration for parties

  • A simple art project

  • A way to teach kids about recycling and flight

How to Take Care of Your Paper Airplane

Handmade paper is sturdy but still delicate. Keep your airplane dry, handle gently, and store flat or hang it up so it doesn’t get bent.

Try Making Your Own Handmade Paper

If you want to go further, try making your own paper at home. It’s fun and makes the whole process from paper to plane something special.
